Road Blockades and Strikes Planned in Punjab: Farmers’ Unions Step Up Protests Against Crop Procurement Delays

Farmers’ unions and related groups plan to hold road blockades near grain markets across Punjab State on October 25, from 11:00 to 15:00. Sit-in protests will also be staged outside Deputy Commissioner offices on October 29 during the same hours. These demonstrations are part of an ongoing statewide protest campaign against alleged delays in crop procurement. Further protests, possibly until early November, may also occur.

In recent days, activists have carried out several rallies, including blockades of roads and railways, as well as protests outside the residences of local officials and politicians. High turnout is expected in districts such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Sangrur.

Authorities will likely monitor these protests, and transport disruptions could occur during marches and blockades. Enhanced security measures may be introduced, including road closures and restrictions on movement around government buildings. Clashes between protesters and law enforcement cannot be ruled out, especially if demonstrators attempt to breach security barriers. Local business activity could also be disrupted, though significant impacts on urban centers or multinational corporations are unlikely.
